This guide covers the most common PC problems and how to fix them step by step.

General Troubleshooting Methodology

Before diving into specific problems, the diagnostic mindset:

  1. Define the problem exactly: When does it happen? Is it consistent or random? What changed recently?
  2. Simplify: Remove unnecessary components, close programs, isolate variables
  3. Check the obvious: Loose cables, unseated RAM, wrong power state
  4. Divide and conquer: Replace/swap one component at a time

Problem: PC Won't Turn On

Symptoms: Press power button — nothing happens. No fans, no lights, no POST.

Step 1: Check the power strip/outlet. Plug something else in to confirm power is reaching the outlet.

Step 2: Check the power switch on the back of the PSU (if present). Make sure it's in the ON position.

Step 3: Check that the 24-pin motherboard connector and 8-pin CPU connector are fully seated. These are the two most common causes.

Step 3: Run DISM: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Step 4: Check if SSD/HDD is detected in BIOS. If the drive doesn't appear, it may be failing.

Step 5: Boot order in BIOS. Ensure your boot drive is first in the boot order.

Step 6: Fresh Windows install. If nothing else works, backup what you can and reinstall Windows.


Problem: No Internet / WiFi Issues

Step 1: Restart the router and modem (unplug 30 seconds, replug).

Step 2: Flush DNS. Open Command Prompt as admin: ipconfig /flushdns

Step 3: Reset network stack: netsh winsock reset followed by netsh int ip reset

Step 4: Update network adapter driver via Device Manager.

Step 5: For WiFi: forget and reconnect to the network. Confirm you're on 5GHz vs 2.4GHz (5GHz is faster but shorter range).
